Dialup Setup

  • Dialup Username and Password: These are given to you by K-Com. The dialup username is the same as your email address, e.g. yourname@k-com.net. Your dialup password will probably be the same as your email password.
  • Dialup Number: Go to Locations and look up the number closest to you. Use that number when your computer setup program asks for the number to dial. If you are traveling, look up the number where you are going so you can access your dialup account through a local call.
  • Dialup Networking: For many users the Internet setup process will be triggered when an Internet application icon is clicked, such as the browser or email icon on the desktop. To set up Dialup Networking manually click on My Computer, then on Dialup Networking, then on Make New Connection. Type "K-Com" for the name of the connection, enter the dialup number to finish the process. Then hold your cursor over the K-Com icon and right click once, then click on Properties, then on Server Type. Be sure to uncheck "Log onto Network". Under Internet Protocols only TCP/IP usually needs to be checked. Always click OK to save your changes. Double-click on the K-Com icon to open the Connect window, enter your dialup username and password to connect. When entering your username and password remember to use the exact format you were given, no spaces and using caps as needed. Make sure your Caps Lock key is not turned on.
  • K-Com Start Page: Most clients want to use the K-Com Start page as their "home page". To do so, click on Tools in Internet Explorer or Preferences under Edit in Netscape. In the place for your home page type: "http://www.k-com.net/start.asp". Click Apply to save this setting. From then on you can click on the Home icon in the upper toolbar to get to the K-Com Start page.
  • Dialup Problems: If you have had no trouble with your dialup process and all of a sudden begin having problems the solution most of the time is simply to reboot your computer (click Start then Shutdown and Restart).

  • Email Password: Usually this will be the same as your dialup password.
  • Incoming Mail Server (POP3): "mail.k-com.net"
  • Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): "mail.k-com.net"
  • IMPORTANT: Due to security issues, please contact us to get specific information regarding setup of your email account such as ports and smtp auth.

Website Setup

  • Website Setup: Websites are not set up automatically for all dialup clients since many do not want a site. Clients who desire a site should contact K-Com.
  • Web Address: If you do not have your own domain name then your web address will be in the form: "http://www.k-com.net/yourname" where "yourname" is the first part of your email address (usually). If you have your own domain the web address will be: "http://www.yourdomain.com" where "yourdomain.com" is the name of your domain.
  • Uploading Files: To upload your web pages and images to your directory on the K-Com web servers you may use an FTP program (File Transfer Protocol) such as WS_FTP. The host server should be entered as ftp.k-com.net. The initial host directory should be "/yourdirectory" where "yourdirectory" is usually your email account name. You also have to enter your username and password (usually the same as your email account name and password). Once you are connected to the server via FTP you can upload and download files from your website directory.
  • Domain Uploading: If you have your own domain name then you should use the host address of "ftp.yourdomain.com" where "yourdomain.com" is the name of your domain. The initial directory, username and password will be given you by K-Com.
  • Web Design: K-Com can build a website for you. Just contact us for more information.
